The death toll in the devastating earthquake in China has risen to 34,073 by noon on Monday, as the seat of relief after the earthquake of the State Council (cabinet).
Another 245,108 people were injured in the earthquake of magnitude 8.0 that struck the southwestern Sichuan Province last Monday.
According to the Ministry of Health, approximately 52,934 people were hospitalized and 7,979 have recovered, while 3,304 died in hospital.
China began a period of three days of mourning for the victims on Monday, flags at half mast and public amusements suspended.
On Sunday evening, the civil affairs departments and the army had sent more than 250,000 tents, 723,500 blankets, 1.78 million pieces of clothing and food and water worth 34.22 million yuan (4.96 million U.S. dollars) for the regions affected by the earthquake.
According to the State Commission for Electricity Regulation (SERC), power supply to all affected counties has been restored at least in part, with the exception of Beichuan, Maoxian and Wolong.
satellite devices have been provided to 76 of the 109 districts where the telecommunications service was cut off and fixed phone line service has been reconnected in the seven most affected counties in Sichuan as of 8:48 p.m. on Sunday.
The State Disaster Relief Commission and the Ministry of Science and Technology has created a team of experts here Monday. Academic and government experts will evaluate the intensity of the earthquake, the geographic impact, other natural disasters caused by earthquakes and solutions, according to the Ministry of Civil Affairs. The team will present detailed proposals for policy makers, he said.
The Department of Public Safety has confirmed that no serious crimes have occurred in areas affected by the earthquake. "Local society remained stable and orderly," the ministry said in a statement Monday.
The police has improved safety in hospitals, temporary shelters, medical camps, warehouses for relief supplies, banks and utilities, he said.
The ministry asked local police to increase patrols and security checks in the earthquake hit residential areas as residents move to shelters. "They will punish any criminals sneaking into the victims' house and stealing property," the statement said.
