Vegetarian Restaurants New York City

Vegetarian Restaurants New York CityCan anyone recommend some good vegetarian restaurants in New York?

I'm going to New York soon, and my friend and I are both vegetarians. We want to try a vegetarian restaurant, so we're here because I'm sure there are more options there than in Michigan. I was in the cafe of life before and I know they have some vegetarian options, but I'm really looking for vegetarian food only places. Thank you in advance!

So many places. The Red Bamboo on West 4th Street is one of my favorites.I do not care about their "pretend meat", but their regular vegetarian dishes are really good.

If you are in Hummus, Hummus Place there is several places. All (not vegan vegetarian, vegan, but also choice.) I'm going to the one on St. Marks Place between 1st and A. http://www.hummusplace.com/ best hummus and homemade (whole wheat ) pita ever! Britain falafel and grape leaves as well. The San Marco is the one they used a lot in the last Woody Allen film "Whatever Works".

Almost every restaurant has vegetarian choices, so I do not limit myself to vegetarian restaurants. If you want to try something really special and have never been, try Ethiopian food. There is a place on 10th Ave. years between the 46th 45th called Queen of Sheba. The sampler platter is a vegetarian heaven! Ethiopian food is like Indian food, but not as spicy and earthy if you have ever had. http://www.shebanyc.com/Vegetarian.html (Do not worry. No fish in the dish vegetarian)

You can also take advantage of the galaxy global Eatery on Irving Place in the village. They have vegetarian and non vegetarian menus http://galaxyglobaleatery.wordpress.com/ I highly recommend the Caesar Salad 9.95 Starlight. It's huge!
romaine hearts, frisse, fries
Caper flowers, cornmeal
crust tofu, avocado, lotus
Hemp & Vegan Caesar crostini
dressing
Do not forget dessert. Try their vanilla ice hempnut Galaxy or a handbag Beggar's:
Deep fried wonton filled with Grand Marnier, chocolate Grenache and strawberries and vanilla ice hempnut

There are tons!

For raw vegan, see Bonobos, which is on 23rd Street near 5th Avenue. It is directly opposite Madison Square Park. It is a fairly simple breakfast type. To eat first upscale, see Pure Food and Wine, which is on Irving Place between 17th and 18th. It is near Union Square. It's expensive, but it's really, really good. If you go for the tasting menu.

I did not go often, but Candle Cafe (3rd Avenue and 75th Street) is pleasant. Skip the desserts, though. Their sister restaurant, Candle 79, a few blocks.

There's a place in the village of Gobo is on 6th Avenue (aka Avenue of the Americas) and Waverly Place. They also have a location on the Upper East Side.

On 4th Street near the 6th Red Bamboo, but it's a tiny little place. They are a kind of vegetarian "soul" food type place - you do not go for healthy food, you go for the generous portions. They have desserts candies Vegan, which means they are impressive.

For dinner-type food, see Joint Kate, who is on 4th Street and Avenue B.

There is an apothecary called Lula Sweet Apothecary vegan few blocks away, on the 6th Street between Avenues A and B.

And check www.happycow.net for more.

For a little shopping, see MooShoes, which is 72 Orchard Street, Lower East Side. They are a shoe store all vegans. There is also an alternative bookstore, Bluestockings on Allen St.
