A vegan diet: The key to a healthy weight Veganism is a somewhat alien concept to many Americans. For generations, livestock products were the stuff of Americana: the families began their mornings with scrambled eggs, discussed their lives, more steak, and enjoyed desserts of ice cream before bedtime. What is veganism?
The term "vegan" was coined just a few decades ago, and it is derived from the word "vegetarian". Basically, vegetarians do not eat animals, but they will eat animal products such as cheese and eggs. Vegans exclude all animal products from their diet. Veganism is to avoid milk and eggs, honey, gelatin and food additives of animal origin.
