Definition of clinical guidelines and a brief description of sources

Clinical guidelines can be defined as systematically developed statements that help practitioners and patients make decisions about their own situation and circumstances of clinical care. Clinical guidelines are important in setting the specific treatment and diagnostic procedures when dealing with patients. In addition, these guidelines are important in the formulation of recommendations that were drawn from published literature and systematic review. (Kanfer, F. & Saslow, 1999)

Usually, the guidelines are important in the following manner;

• Identify practices that meet the needs of patients
• Describe the general approaches to management, approaches and treatment of diseases and conditions

It should be noted that these guidelines are not fixed protocols such as they are mere recommendations and the responsible management of clinics is what can ensure that patients receive the care they deserve. In fact, every clinician should have its own type of treatment plan must be tailored to individual patient needs and specific circumstances in which such treatment plans are carried out.
