Oak Chunks

Oak ChunksHow to cure a slice of wood from an old oak?

My mother just had an old oak tree taken down and I got them to save me a piece of the main trunk. It is about 3 feet wide, and perhaps 8-10 inches thick. I wish I had cut into segments 1-2 inches thick for small tables. How do I fix this so you do not crack as it dries?
An arborist friend said he had heard that rubbing with linseed oil per day for about a year might work, but he had never tried himself. Ideas?
Would it cut before treatments cause the segments to warp as it dries, or should I leave it as one big chunk?

Guess what ... Your friend is right. If you cut the wood before he had a chance to dry and set like a log, it is not a good start. The wood shrinks, you can not prevent it. But you can try to replace the moisture it contains. Treat with linseed oil on a regular basis over time may reduce the likelihood of splintering wood while seasoning (by slowing the drying process) segments. records usually take up to 12 months of drying, the timber accelerates moisture loss. We have done quite a few pictures of the truck into slices and yes some crack and split, but you can work with it and still have a beauitful song. Good luck

If I understand it better to have it sawed while green. so if you can stack flat and stickers when dry, you should have some useful advice in a year or two. you can take it and have dried in the oven if logging facilities nearby. they make a sealant, you can paint on the ends of the planks to prevent the ends of the audit. moisture content should be around 8-11%. They are moisture meters to check this ...

You have the choice, leave it as it is and let it dry over a long period of time.
cut into chunks that you use for your tables with a chainsaw, then let it dry and warp a bit, if its going himself.
Finally, the mill timber to size after drying and warping, and you will have a piece of wood that will not warp over.
