The word "kosher" means proper or fit. Because it relates to kosher dietary laws. They are safe to consume and sometimes used as ingredients to produce additional food.

Previously, most kosher foods were made in the family kitchen or in a store or a small factory in the community. At that time, it was easy to know if the product was kosher or not. Sometimes, even rabbis used to control the purity of the product.

At present, industrialization, mass production and shipping have created a situation where many products that Jews consume are treated, preserved and stored in trade in industrial located thousands of miles house.

Kosher Foods:

To determine what fish is kosher, the Torah establishes two criteria. The fish need scales and fins. The scales must be removed easily. It is important not to damage the skin of fish.

Usually, kosher fish scales are rounded, smooth edges and thin. They are like the teeth of a comb. This does not include shellfish. In addition, it requires no special preparation unlike poultry and meat.

However, fish scales must be visible to the buyer so it makes the kosher status of fish. Therefore, unless properly supervised, it is best not to buy ground fish or fish fillets.

According to rabbinic law, it is wrong to eat meat and fish together. All smoked fish products and processed fish products require reliable supervision of rabbis. All meat kosher food must be slaughtered by a ritual called Shechita.

Modern halakha (Jewish law) classifies the flesh of both mammals and birds such as meat and fish, Pareve, meat or dairy products.
