The first step is to find a distributor. The Maine lobster industry is regulated by the state and remains for the most part family owned and operated. It's a good thing! While most major distributors company did not waste their time dealing with a small order, the pound lobster family will probably look back to get your business.
You can easily find a good lobster distributor using a search engine like Yahoo or Google. I would use key words such as "lobster wholesale" or "large live lobster." This will return a multitude of results, some better than others. Look for a provider of lobster that welcomes small orders. Many places will have a page dedicated to the wholesale inquiries. Just send an email and leave your name and number, and the amount of lobster that you wish to order. Someone must return your email and give you a price.
When you get the quote, make sure it is broken down by pounds of lobster and postage. Shipping can be quite expensive, so do not be shocked if it is several hundred dollars.
Most distributors gives two options for delivery. FedEx / UPS or by air. FedEx / UPS is great because it is delivered directly to your door, even on weekends. This convenience has a cost, shipping 100 pounds overnight by FedEx will cost you over $ 200. FedEx should be used when your total weight is low, or if you are unable to use air freight.
The second option, the air freight is much cheaper but less convenient. The distributor of Lobster will pack up your lobster and lead them to a local airport. The lobster will be on a plane to an airport near you. In most cases, you will be asked to pick up the lobsters at the airport. air cargo will cost between 50 and 75 cents per pound.
