Low Carb VeganThe truth about diets low in carbohydrates and your health

The low-carbohydrate diets have been extremely popular in recent years. They boast of significant weight loss, which is a major selling point in today's society. Everyone wants to lose a large amount of weight, and fast. Diets low in carbohydrates will make you lose weight, but are they really healthy?

The logic behind low-carbohydrate diets is that the increase in carbohydrates raises blood sugar and insulin, leading to weight gain. By reducing the consumption of carbohydrates, blood sugar and insulin decreases, resulting in weight loss. What is overlooked is how you're supposed to get the nutrients and vitamins your body needs without certain foods. A low-carb diet is good in the sense that it eliminates sugar and refined carbohydrates, but it also leads to a lack of dietary fiber, and deficiencies of several vitamins and essential nutrients.

The South Beach Diet and the Atkins diet are two of the low carbohydrate diets the most popular around today. Everyone has a different approach to weight loss.

The South Beach Diet

The South Beach Diet works in three phases and focuses on eating the "right" carbs and "good" fats. The first phase eliminates most carbs for two weeks. This is to allow your body to get used to not having. Phase two reintroduced some carbohydrates, and this phase lasts until your target weight is reached. The third phase introduces a greater variety of foods, and the third phase lasts a lifetime.

The disadvantages of this scheme are that the first two weeks require a lot of will, because your body was accustomed to having these additional carbohydrates, and now he has none. People on this diet can sometimes feel a weakness and tremors due to lack of carbohydrates. As mentioned earlier, the South Beach Diet is supposed to help you lose 8-13 pounds in the first phase. This is extremely unhealthy, and probably more because of the weight of the water that comes off and not the diet of low carbs. The first phase bans fruit and vegetables, while the first two weeks of food, you are missing out on essential vitamins and nutrients, a problem similar to the Atkins diet.

The Atkins Diet

The Atkins diet is carbohydrate restriction similar to the South Beach diet. The Atkins diet has four phases, each requiring a calculation of a number of grams of carbohydrates. The scheme encourages you to eliminate sugar from your diet and usually requires frequent consumption of meat. The consumption of meat immediately eliminates vegetarians and vegans to take part in the diet. The Atkins diet is rich in saturated fat and cholesterol because of the amount of meat you eat.

Just like the South Beach diet, the Atkins diet you will succeed in losing weight. However, many essential nutrients and vitamins are cut on the scheme. This system is low on fiber and lead to deficiencies in calcium, potassium and magnesium.

You can lose weight on these two schemes. However, keeping the weight off is another story. Since these plans restrict many foods, keeping them extremely difficult. Stay on them may also lead to health problems such as osteoporosis due to the continued lack of nutrients and vitamins. Take a daily supplement while on one of these plans can help offset the gaps. The best way to lose weight and keep it off is to eat a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains and follow an exercise program. The plan is simple, healthy and good for the long term.
