Halal Malaysia

I know that Malaysia is a predominantly Muslim country, but since it also has a non-Muslim population, I wonder about eating out. Is the food in typical restaurants halal? What about food in eating areas, shopping malls, etc.? Most restaurants do not sign halal, so I wonder. Any help from those who have been to / lived in Malaysia would be greatly appreciated.
