What are the medical criteria to determine what calorie ADA diet instead of a diabetic on? I am an RN trying to find this information and come short. How do you decide to place someone on a diet of 1200 or ADA 2500 ADA diet? Is this a question of how much they weigh?
It is based on the patient's body weight and ideal body weight or target.
The first link below has excellent grades step by step on how to calculate IBW, and then to help formulate a diet. The second also goes in the percentages of fat, carbohydrates and proteins.
To be honest, as a medical resident, we used to just eyeball the person and select a standard meal in the kitchen, 1600, 1800 or 2000. Of course, when they were rejected and see the diabetic nurse, they got a customized meal plan.
